POLICE are warning residents to be on their guard after an attempted distraction burglary took place in Wanstrow.
A man knocked on the door of a pensioner and asked to read her meter but she became suspicious as she had recently had her meter read and refused to let the man in.
He walked away and got into what has been described as a 'tatty' red Peugeot 205.
He is described as white, in his mid 50s, medium build, bald and was wearing dark clothing.
There may have been another man waiting in the car.
A police spokeswoman said: "After the man left the woman had the foresight to ring her electricity board, who told her they were not carrying out any meter readings in the area, she then telephone the police.
“The reason she became suspicious was that she had only recently had her meter read and paid her bill."
Anyone who may have information on the incident or can identify the man is asked to call police on 101.
