Jos Buttler tops England run-scoring list in ODI series defeat

Wedmore's Jos Buttler finished as England’s top run scorer but could not help his country avoid a 2-1 series defeat in the NatWest ODI series against Australia.
The wicketkeeper, who used to be a member of Cheddar Cricket Club, hit two half-centuries, including a match-winning 65 off 48 balls to secure a final-over victory in the fourth match, taking the series to a decider on Monday.
He briefly threatened to rescue England again in that match, smashing 42 before being bowled by James Faulkner having faced 37 deliveries. England went on to finish on 249 all out, 49 runs short of the Australian total.
Having taken ten catches and a stumping, as well as scoring 182 runs, in the four matches, Buttler was delighted to repay the faith the selectors have shown in him after a slow start to his ODI career.
“Up to this moment, I haven’t quite performed as well as I would have liked,” said Buttler.
“When you get the opportunity, it’s important to try to take it. I hope that’s what I’ve done – and I’ll continue to do that.”
Buttler will now rejoin the Somerset squad ahead of their final match of the season at Nottinghamshire, which starts on Tuesday, with safety from relegation still not secured.
