Clarrie Dunbar's men booked their place in the knockout stages of the Wessex Indoor Bowls League competition with a 122-60 victory over Nailsea last weekend.

It was the Standerwick club's fourth successive win in the competition and they will finish top of the Central Region standings should they beat Weston St Andrews by 16 points in the sixth and final group game on February 24.

Last weekend's match was tight at first, with Nailsea three shots up after five ends, but Clarrie scored 37 shots to their opponents' six between ends ten and 15 to open up a decisive lead and take all 16 points.

Rink scores at Clarrie: Mick Maslen, Trevor Bachelor, Terry Perkins & Russell Francis 24 – J Couch 21; John Freeman, Glyn Jones, Alan Totterdell & Keith Bailey 40 – B Holloway 8.

Rink scores at Nailsea: Andy Taylor, Mike Sawyers, Steve Wiltshire & Craig Doughty 28 – D Gregory 21; Alex Shadwell, Brian Hawkins, Dale Taylor & Andrew Colebrooke 30 – D Crawshaw 10.

Clarrie's men were also in Somerset County League Division 1 action against table-topping Watchet and edged to a superb 82-72 victory to claim 12 of the 16 available points.

Rink scores at Clarrie: Mick Maslen, Keith Windel, Russell Milne & Alan Totterdale 11 – I Trunks 19; Greg Smith, Andrew Hancock, John Freeman & Glyn Jones 31 – N Savage 16.

Rink scores at Watchet: Norman Guffick, John Smith, Brian Hawkins & Fred Pope 24 – A Rendall 11; Peter Hooley, John Jones, Mike Sawyers & Keith Bailey 16 – A Sully 26.

Clarries' ladies, meanwhile, progressed to the third round of the Somerset Women County Indoor Bowling Association Double Rink competition with a 44-35 victory over local rivals Purnell.

Jeanette Hocking's rink recorded a decisive 21-shot win at home, meaning a late surge by Purnell skipper Ann Chivers' rink in the away fixture proved to be in vain.

Rink score at Clarrie: Marcia Hartley, Ann Jones, Ailsa Midwinter & Jeanette Hocking 30 – J Gullick 9.

Rink score at Purnell: Sadie Farrell, Nicki Keefe, Teresa King & Wendy Ivory 14 – A Chivers 26.

Clarrie's ladies will be looking for more knockout success on Saturday when they take on Clevedon in the Optika Top Nine, the regional inter-club national knockout competition.

Clarrie will also be looking to reclaim the Mixed Annual Challenge Trophy when they entertain Somerset under-25s on Saturday (2pm).

But the big event at Standerwick this weekend is Saturday's showdown between Clarrie colleagues John Freeman and Russell Francis in the regional men's singles final, with a place at the national finals at stake.
