Residents are being asked to fill in a survey on the state of the town centre as part of a remodelling project.

Frome Town Council wants to hear from people who use the town frequently, work in the centre or just visit occasionally, and has said it will welcome all comments, be they positive or negative.

The short survey went live this week and can be found on the town council's website until the end of the month.

Volunteers will also be out on the street collecting opinions from residents, in face-to-face chats in the town centre.

Karen Clements, the council's town centre manager, said she hoped many people would take the time to fill in the survey.

She said: "Following on from the remodelling feasibility study, we know many people are interested in the current and future state of the town centre.

"We hope many people, whether users or non-users, will complete the survey to give us a comprehensive picture of the town at present."

The council said it is working with Action for Market Towns (AMT), a national membership group that provides information, examples of best practice and national representation to towns.

The benchmarking project, to find the best practices of the town, will capture the data on 12 key performance indicators in the town centre, including retail offering, footfall, car parking, business confidence, shopper origin and town centre user views.

Once the town centre has been reviewed, AMT will provide the council with a report highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of Frome, how the town centre could be improved, examples of good practice and how the town fares against other towns from across England and Wales and towns of a similar type.

A town council spokesman said: "In the past, benchmarking has been used to understand how town centres operate, plan and develop regeneration initiatives, measure the impact of developments and as an evidence base to attract funding."
